Crime is a disease

My article in Bombay times in the context of the gang rape that happened in Mumbai

Crime is a disease

In the wake of last week's shocking Mumbai gang rape I really was disturbingly intrigued about one thing..I felt it would be very important to know what the Mumbai rapists would have felt about the huge national outrage of both the Media and the public over the Delhi gang rape that happened a few months back...After all the noise made and stringent laws passed if it dint deter this new gang from repeating such a blatant and a horrific act once again and that too in the nerve centre of the commercial capital of india, its obvious that criminals such as these are the last people to fear or bother about laws  .To start with I dont think any criminal who commits a crime actually thinks of the severity of the punishment..it's not possible that a criminal individual will think for himself 'its ok if I go to jail for a term of 5 years for raping a woman but I will think again if its going to be a life term" A criminal commits an act of a crime either because he cant control his urge which is psychological or because he thinks he wont be caught which is due to his part ignorance and part overconfidence.... So in both ways us common folks screams from the roof tops of our twitters  for justice and more punishment actually never reach where they should reach which is the concerned criminals cell phones....and if at all they reach its very evident that the criminals care a hoot about it>> And with our screams if we are targeting the political leaders and law enforcement agencies for the inadequacies in our police department lets not forget that even in a far superiorly equipped place such as New york city also such crimes happen much more rampantly than here..And trying to greatly increase police vigilance and bringing in all kinds of restrictions on movement in the name of safety will only push our society towards becoming a police state>> It is easy to cite the examples of almost crime free countries which practice stringent and brutal punishments such as Sharia, but are any of us really are willing to lose our individual freedom just for the sake of feeling safe..the answer from most of us  ofcourse will be a resounding big big No> >> Freedom comes with a price and we have no choice but to pay for it and yes sometimes very dearly..like the old saying goes you cant have the cake and eat it too..so if this bitter truth sinks in and if we manage to keep our emotional outrage aside for a moment and instead of screaming mindlessly and uselessly for the blood of the criminal and jumping into the social network circus ring to be among the seemingly shocked and appalled celebs nd politicos of the world i really think it would be much more wiser to take a mature and more indepth look at crime for what it really is...i think crime is a disease and a criminal is its carrier..if there is a life threatening disease it's obvious that one has to keep working on trying to understand its origin and nature  to contain or eradicate it ...its plain useless and stupid to get angry with the disease...one might say that a criminal is a human being and has a rational mind and hence he needs to be responded to on the same level as that of a human being..But going by the repeated examples we are witnessing again and again that theory does not hold water at all because a rational and normal thinking man will never take part in such a horrific act as a gang rape in the first place..so it follows that our aggravated and angry normal human reactions will never have an effect on such criminal organisms which indulge in gang rape and other such horrific acts>> It goes without saying that there are no easy answers or solutions for such a thing as eradication of crime..No civil society no matter how advanced has never been able to decimate crime..if at all possible to achieve that one way I strongly believe could be that it should be diagnosed and treated in the sa me way as one would treat a disease...I really think it will be very enlightening both for the policing agencies and the common people if an effort were made by some concerned to make some really good psychologists conduct extremely professional indepth interviews with the Delhi and Mumbai gang rapists with regard to what they think of women and why they think like that ..also to ask them what they think of the existing laws and what makes them think that they will not be caught ..to make those interview contents public for everyone to read will be at least a first step towards us common people understanding the origin, nature and the cause of  that horrific disease called crime and hopefully a way forward for some of us to reach some kind of a treatment for its cure

  1. Rape: Is it a thought ( process) that possesses the Rapist to commit such a heinous Crime?
    1. A thought (of Rape) is the first thing that triggers in the mind of the Rapist.
    2. A thought (good or bad) is created by our Sanskaras ( the habits) inflicted at an early age and remain in us if not corrected at a proper time. Thoughts and Sanskaras (Good or bad) are a part of everyone’s Life : If parents/relatives/Schools and colleges keep a check on the thought process of every child at an early stage, possibly a person can never be affected with such Bad thoughts.

Such heinous crimes (like Rape) can be triggered in a human mind only through Thoughts.
Thoughts (or Sanskaras) are developed in the human mind at an early stage,as such through :

    i. Through our good or bad company
ii. Through bad vices such as Drinking Alcohol or taking Drugs.
iii. Through Greed of Money or Fame at an early stage in Life.
iv. Through addiction of Pornographic materials.
    v. Through uneducation or no interest in Studies.
The nation must wake up and create an Awareness to see that Parents/Schools/Colleges and NGOs take the responsibily of checking the character development of each child and to see that the Child transforms into a Socially responsible Adult of the Indian Society.

  2. Sir,happy that you have given a practical answer to this horrific disease called CRIME... I fear that many people in this society have stopped understanding the facts u quote and have started ignoring them quoting that you are writing this just for publicity.. I dont know who is the culprit in this context.. sometimes I feel U are the culprit because you have overcoated your goodness with unexisting nature of yours by which everyone started accepting unexisted of you simply ignoring actual U...
Anyways thanks for such a meaningful solution for this yet to diagnose horrific disease called CRIME..

  4. The rate of rape occurrence in India is 2 for every 1 lakh population

The rate of rape occurrence in U.K , U.S and Australia is 28 per 1 lakh population

If Blaming the Police and Government for rape occurrences is what all we can do , then we should also praise Manmohan Singh and Mumbai Police for doing a better job than Obama and
New York Police .. for the rate of rape occurrence in India is far less than U.S .

Its the Society that influences rape occurrences rather than Government or Police.

24,923 Rape cases were reported in 2012 in India . On an average , its 68 rape cases per day !

But, how many have you heard of ? Just Delhi and Mumbai ?

What more brutal than being Raped is that the victims live in a society where we doesn't care about 99.99% of the rape cases !

    1. Its not that we have less in number when compared with US and UK. Its that we can still reduce that number if the laws r made stricter and punishment is given immediately. As per ur stats, 25,000 women lost their lives and also,in India, many wont report it to police. Just consider Mumbai case. This gang did this kind of things before(4 times) but non reported. So out of 5,only 1 is being reported. Our govts starts a program so proudly, names it(Nirbhaya scheme) but doesnt release the funds. That's what people r asking now. And how low can we go comparing rapes with others countries? Culture also should betaken in consideration.

    2. 1. Only 16% of rape cases are reported even in U.S. If all the rape cases got reported , the actual rate of rape occurrence would be 6 times higher .

      2. If Indian government programs and funds can reduce rapes , do the developed countries lack funds or they are dumb for they couldn't create a program to reduce rapes ?

3.People are asking now . They are always free to ask anything from government as they are paying taxes . They will ask to reduce rapes , reduce unemployment , reduce poverty , reduce petrol and onion prices too !

      4. China has strict laws where death sentence can be awarded for 55 crimes including corruption .

China executes around 4,000 people every year , the highest in the world.

But then , the number of rape cases reported in China is 32,000 an year.

Why didn't the Strict laws reduce rapes in China ?

We want to kill the criminal instead of crime , even its a rape case.

25,000 people should be killed every year to reduce rape in India. Its 1,25,000 including unreported cases.

But then , the rapist might actually murder the victim to avoid getting caught in rape case because people never protest for murder should carry death sentence in India .

In 80% of the cases , the rapist might be of victim's family or a relative . What laws or punishments can do if those victims never report it ?

      5. The government should be blamed for not preaching ethics to rapists .

The government should be blamed for allocating 1 policeman on average for 770 people .

Instead they should allocate superman .

A superman can protect 770 people from 1.25billion population .

A superman can protect each individual from the rest 769 people allocated to him .

A superman can prevent these 770 people from committing any crime on the rest 1.25 billion people

Only a Superman can prevent rape that happens every 21 minutes in India with 1 billion people.

And Manmohan is no Superman , Is He ?

  5. People act irrationally because thinking is completely in thrall to passion (emotions). If you are looking for a solution to this problem of crime and sexual-violence, you can read this blog: http://12stepsinaday.blogspot.in/ and get in touch.
Yes, you can also watch this presentation clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45-DuO7Nl8Q

  6. to be effective, the carrier of the disease should be killed and then the measures to safegaurd has to be taken. If not i think its of no use to just have the measures in place. if the computer has a virus we will first cleanup the virus and then place the safegaurds, or else the virus will spread to the entire system and the having the safegaurds will also not make any sense.

  7. So the bottom line is, "get them to fear getting caught, to make them believe that criminals can not roam around freely and that our law knows its job and does it!"

  8. Very Good solution. At least we will try to know what is in the mind of criminal who committed crime. We can take care about it in Future.

  9. People commit crimes because they think they can get away with it. Not because its a disease. Thoughts of evil(to be interpreted by each as what they think is evil) come for everyone but its either self restraint or the fear that they will not be able to get away with it is what will stop them.

  10. The challenge with India is the complete lack of fear of the law. Basically the country is devolving to the "laws of the jungle". Be it rapes, tax evasion, corruption, running red lights at traffic intersections, a parallel black money economy, dumping toxic elements into the environment -- basically the citizens of the nation have complete disregard for the "Laws of the Nation".
It is always about self over society or nation. Keeping one's home clean while dumping trash out the window on the street is the character of the citizens. Unless there is some enlightenment by a large percentage of the citizens, a sense of community over individual, and a massive cleanup of goonda and vote-bank politics - the country will continue to careen towards a miserable abyss.
No amount of outrage or transient protests over events like this is going to count for a bit. A systemic change needs to happen - and I don't see it. Good Luck with this Functioning Anarchy.

  11. Getting to know what these people are thinking will only help the story writers. We feel frightened when we are gonna lose something. That 'Something' varies from person to person. Most of these people dont have anything to lose. When you dont have anything to lose, then you will not be frightened of anything. So, these people should have something to lose. They will not have anything to lose unless they are busy with something, like education, profession or a business. people should get busy. This can be done only from childhood atmosphere.

  12. It is easy to pontificate on such issues like Bombay gang rape incident taking recourse to psychological profile of such beasts.they must be given the extre punishments allowed by law And given wide publicity in society at large.now even 12-12yrs boys and girls are indulging in all vices.Hence when such acts happens they must be under watch of police. Now the youth have no fear ofpsrents.poverty or other in capacities need not neccessarly make people criminals.if criminality is a disease it can be cured only giving exemplary punishments after due process of law.If such an incident happens to one of our dear ones one cannot think on the lines of RGV.
